Dartmoor is not somewhere to associate with the flat expanse of an airfield. As a rule that is true, but an exception came about then an areodrome was built on Roborough Down north of Plymouth. The flat heath by Yelverton had been considered for an airport, but was discounted because it was thought an airfield on Dartmoor would be prone to bad weather. However, World War Two brought the need for an air station to defend Plymouth. The airfield at Yelverton was completed in 1941 and commissioned as RAF Station Harrowbeer. During its four years of operational service the station went through many changes. The people posted there came from all over the world and they were to witness many triumphs and tragedies. This is the story of those who flew and served at RAF Harrowbeer - the airfield on the moor.
